Welcome to my first subscriber newsletter. Seemingly, it would appear that my job is first and foremost cooking and recipe writing, and I guess in most ways it is, but I’ve always considered myself a storyteller more than anything. If you’re like me (which I have to imagine, if you’re reading this, you are!), food tells our histories. When I think back to the most impactful moments of my life, both good and bad, happy and sad, I can usually remember something about what I was eating around the time. With my cookbooks and with The Kitchen, I really felt like I found my voice and my calling – telling stories through food.

I am really looking forward to having this outlet to share my life more in depth, what I am cooking, and more than anything, to connect with my readers and grow our little community. Please reach out and let me know what you’d like more of, whether it’s sheet pan recipes, or entertaining questions, or what to do with chicken breasts when you can’t think of anything to cook. Send me your pics of what you have made, and if you see me on the street, at the grocery store, or walking through the airport, please say hi!

Now, on to the good stuff.

I thought they were pretty common, but I think they must be more of a Southern and Midwest thing, as many of my friends here in New York had not. Back in West Virginia, when I was growing up, it was definitely part of the holiday party rotation. My great aunt Pat would have her church friends over for cookies and punch (her punch was made of sherbet and lemon lime soda).

Here’s how a cookie exchange works:
